Tanzania Safari from South Africa

Planning a Tanzania safari from South Africa? Whether you’re starting your journey from Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban, getting to East Africa’s top wildlife destinations has never been easier. Within just a few hours of departing South Africa, you can be watching lions in the Serengeti, spotting rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater, or exploring the golden plains under the African sun.

Tanzania offers what no other safari destination can: the Great Migration, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera filled with wildlife, and an unmatched mix of scenic landscapes, rich cultures, and untamed wilderness. From luxury fly-in safaris to classic overland adventures, this journey is for travelers who want to experience the very best of Africa, beyond Kruger.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know: how to get there, sample itineraries, the best months to visit, and the key differences between fly-in and drive-in safaris. If you’re ready for something unforgettable, this is where it starts.

Why Book a Tanzania Safari from South Africa?

For travelers based in South Africa, Tanzania opens the door to a completely different safari experience, one that's wilder, more remote, and bursting with natural spectacle. Whether you’ve done Kruger before or you're planning your first safari, Tanzania offers something extraordinary that you won’t find at home. Here's why many South African travelers are heading north:

Reason Description
The Great Migration Witness over 2 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles move across the Serengeti, a phenomenon unique to Tanzania.
Unmatched Diversity of Parks From the endless plains of Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire’s baobabs, no two parks are the same.
Big Five in One Trip Tanzania offers a higher chance to see the Big Five in one itinerary, especially inside the Ngorongoro Crater.
Zanzibar Add-On Combine your safari with a beach escape in Zanzibar, a tropical island full of spice tours, history, and white-sand beaches.
Seamless Access from South Africa Daily flights from Johannesburg to Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar make it easy to connect with northern Tanzania’s safari parks.
Less Crowded Experience Compared to Kruger, Tanzania’s parks are wilder and more remote, perfect for travelers seeking raw, uncrowded adventures.

Flight Routes to Tanzania Safari Regions

Johannesburg (JNB) or Cape Town (CPT) to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO): Most travelers fly into Kilimanjaro, the main gateway for Northern Tanzania safaris. Airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and South African carriers provide convenient connections, typically with a stopover in Nairobi or Addis Ababa.

Connecting to Serengeti: While there are no direct commercial flights from South Africa to Serengeti’s Seronera Airstrip (SEU), you can take a regional flight from Kilimanjaro or Nairobi with local operators like Auric Air or Coastal Aviation. Our team arranges all transfers to ensure smooth connections.

Alternative Route via Zanzibar (ZNZ): Seasonal direct flights operate between South Africa and Zanzibar, offering an excellent option for travelers wanting a beach extension before or after their safari. From Zanzibar, you can fly or drive to Arusha or Serengeti airstrips.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania From South Africa

June to October is the dry season and the best time for game viewing, especially if witnessing the Great Migration is on your list. Wildlife is easier to spot as animals gather around water sources and vegetation thins out.

November to March marks the green season. It’s lush, quieter, and excellent for birdwatching. This period is also known for calving, so expect to see newborn animals and predator action.

April and May bring the long rains. It’s the most affordable time to visit, with dramatic landscapes and fewer tourists. While some roads can be muddy, it’s a rewarding time for seasoned safari-goers seeking solitude and savings

on Tanzania safari?

Tanzania offers some of the richest and most diverse wildlife experiences in Africa. For many, the highlight is encountering the legendary Big Five, making every game drive full of possibilities.

But the magic doesn’t stop with the Big Five. Tanzania is home to countless other iconic species, from the swift cheetah and vast herds of wildebeest and zebra, to giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, hyenas, jackals, and playful troops of baboons and vervet monkeys. For bird lovers, the country is a true paradise. With over 1,100 bird species, including colorful residents and migratory birds from Europe and Asia, the birdwatching here, especially between December and April, is simply extraordinary.

At Nihapa Tours, we take pride in helping our guests connect with this incredible wildlife in the most respectful, insightful, and rewarding way possible.

What makes Tanzania Wildlife Unique

The Big Five!

Elephant roaming in Tarangire during 5-Day Tarangire Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater Safari

Tanzania is one of the rare places in Africa where you can see all of the Big Five: Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo, and Rhino in their natural environment, often within a single safari.

From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the lush floor of the Ngorongoro Crater and the rugged beauty of Tarangire, each landscape offers a unique stage for these iconic animals. You might catch a lion pride on the hunt at dawn, elephants marching across the valley at midday, or a leopard stretched out on a tree branch at sunset; no two days are ever the same.

Our professional guides, born and raised in this land, share real stories and field knowledge gained through years of experience. Every safari is designed not just for sightings, but for meaningful moments that connect you deeply with Africa’s most legendary wildlife.

Tanzania Safari Vehicles

A safari vehicle is a core part of the overall safari experience. Since most game drives last between 5 to 8 hours a day, the vehicle becomes your main base for exploring the national parks. These 4×4 vehicles are specially built to handle the country’s rugged terrain, offering comfort, safety, and clear views of the wildlife.

A good safari vehicle is essential in Tanzania, whether you’re tracking big cats in the Serengeti or observing elephants in Tarangire. Most vehicles feature large sliding windows, pop-up roofs, and modified seating for better visibility. While some itineraries may include walking safaris or lodge rest days, much of your adventure will take place inside the vehicle.

Activities to Do on a Tanzania Safari

Game Drives

Game drives are the foundation of every Tanzania safari. From sunrise to sunset, these guided adventures take you deep into national parks and conservation areas, where wildlife roams freely and the landscape changes with every kilometer. It’s where most of your sightings happen, and where the magic begins.

Morning drives often start early, catching predators on the move and herds grazing in the cool air. In the afternoon, the golden light paints the plains, perfect for photography and dramatic views. Skilled guides use their knowledge of animal behavior to take you close, always respectfully.

Every game drive is different. One day brings lion cubs playing in the grass; the next, elephants drinking at a waterhole. Whether in Serengeti, Ngorongoro, or Tarangire, these drives deliver the real essence of Tanzania’s wilderness — wild, unpredictable, and unforgettable.

Walking Safaris

Walking safaris reconnect you to the raw heart of Africa. Without the hum of an engine, every sound becomes sharper, birds calling, leaves rustling, the distant grunt of a buffalo. Led by armed guides and expert trackers, you step into the bush not just as an observer, but as a participant.

You notice the small wonders often missed from a vehicle: animal tracks in the dust, medicinal plants, and signs of life hidden in plain sight. It’s a slower, more immersive way to experience the land — where each footstep brings a deeper appreciation of nature’s rhythm and detail.

Walking safaris are available in select areas like Tarangire, Ruaha, and private reserves. They’re safe, educational, and deeply personal. Whether it’s your first or fifth safari, walking among wildlife, at a respectful distance, offers a perspective that’s grounded, unforgettable, and quietly thrilling.

Hot Air Baloon Safaris

Hot air balloon safaris in Tanzania offer a once-in-a-lifetime perspective of the wild. As the sun begins to rise, you quietly lift off above the Serengeti or Tarangire, watching the golden light sweep across the plains. Herds of wildebeest, elephants, and giraffes move below you, peaceful and unaware, as the savannah wakes in silence.

The experience is unlike anything else on safari. From the sky, the vastness of Tanzania’s landscapes comes into full view, and you can truly appreciate how wildlife flows naturally through rivers, woodlands, and open grasslands. Every moment is cinematic, and every photograph tells a deeper story.

After landing, a champagne bush breakfast awaits you under the acacia trees, a classic safari tradition. The balloon safari may last only an hour, but it leaves an impression that stays with you for years. It’s a peaceful, awe-inspiring activity that adds beauty, elegance, and perspective to your safari journey.

Popular questions about Tanzania Safari

  • Can I fly from South Africa to Serengeti directly?

There are no direct flights from South Africa to the Serengeti. Most travelers fly from Johannesburg or Cape Town to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) with a stopover, typically in Nairobi or Addis Ababa. From there, you can take a domestic flight to the Serengeti or begin your safari by road.

  • Is Tanzania safe for South African travelers?

Yes, Tanzania is considered a safe destination for South African travelers. The safari regions are especially secure, and tourism is a major industry. Still, like any international travel, it’s best to exercise standard safety precautions, such as avoiding isolated areas at night and keeping valuables secure.

  • Do I need a visa to enter Tanzania from South Africa?

Yes, South African passport holders require a tourist visa to enter Tanzania. The visa can be obtained on arrival or online via the Tanzania eVisa portal. It’s recommended to apply in advance to avoid delays.

  • What vaccines do I need?

Yellow fever vaccination is required if you're coming from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. Routine vaccines such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus are also recommended. Consult your travel clinic at least 4–6 weeks before departure for the latest advice.

  • Can I use ZAR in Tanzania?

No, the South African Rand (ZAR) is not accepted in Tanzania. The official currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS), but US dollars are widely accepted for tourism-related payments. It’s a good idea to carry both USD and local currency for convenience.

  • Is it better to visit Kruger or Serengeti?

Both offer incredible wildlife experiences, but they differ in character. Kruger is easily accessible and highly developed, ideal for self-drive safaris. The Serengeti, on the other hand, offers vast open landscapes, a more untamed feel, and the world-famous Great Migration. For a more dramatic, off-the-beaten-path adventure, many consider the Serengeti unmatched.

Looking for More Things to Do in Tanzania?

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 meters, is a spectacular natural icon towering over Tanzania’s northern landscapes. For those seeking a taste of adventure without the full climb, guided day trips to Kilimanjaro’s lower slopes provide breathtaking views, a chance to explore lush rainforests, and encounters with local Chagga communities. For more experienced trekkers, multi-day expeditions challenge visitors to reach the “Roof of Africa,” traversing diverse ecosystems from tropical forest to alpine desert.

The climb demands physical stamina and mental strength but rewards with stunning panoramas of glaciers and vast savannahs below. Whether opting for a leisurely day hike or a full summit attempt, Kilimanjaro offers an unforgettable experience that complements any safari. Its majestic presence enriches Tanzania’s travel offerings, inviting visitors to connect with nature, culture, and the thrill of conquering one of the world’s most iconic peaks.

Nihapa Tours was one of the most incredible tour companies I have ever used. Their communication, attention to detail and knowledge was perfect. They were personable and make you feel so welcome. We were able to completely relax knowing that everything was taken care of. Our guide Fadhili was so knowledgable and created unique opportunities for us with his deep understanding of the wildlife and parks. Our meals each day in the parks on Safari were delicious and beautiful, not just a bagged lunch. We opted for a private car and it was worth every penny! There is not one thing I would change about our tour with Nihapa and I can't recommend them enough.

I wish we had more stars to rate them even higher. Our trip was amazing, we had a wonderful experience with Suma, he made us feel like family, we felt that we belong here, he took us to best spots and we saw literally everything we wanted to see (all the big fives) and up close too. The vehicle was exceptionally neat, I was so stunned by the onboard services we could charge our phones and camera, we had a fridge and neck pillows, we didn't expect all this from a safari jeep. We are mostly grateful for their organisation, the planning and choice of accommodation matched perfectly with our expectations, they made our trip one we will never forget and we cant thank them enough. Thank you so much.

My family and I had the trip of a lifetime in Tanzania in June with Nihapa Tours. Kelvin and the team were outstanding! Everything from planning, our arrival, and our 11 days spent adventuring was phenomenal. Every detail was thoughtfully planned and considered to ensure that we were not only comfortable, but had a luxurious experience. I highly recommend Nihapa tours to anyone looking to embark on a Safari adventure. Honorable mention for our amazing Safari driver, Suma. We were so lucky to have him and he ensured we saw everything we hoped to see and more. I would definitely recommend splitting your adventure up between Safari and Beach (Zanzibar). We did this and it made the experience all the more exciting yet relaxing. I cannot thank Kelvin and team with Nihapa tours enough! I feel extremely blessed to have had this experience and to do so alongside family. We will never forget it!
