From 1 October 2026, foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania must have valid Inbound Travel Insurance under the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026, Government Notice No. 256.
The requirement applies to travelers entering Mainland Tanzania through airports, seaports, and land borders.

What Is Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance?
Tanzania Inbound Travel Insurance is mandatory for eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania from 1 October 2026.
The insurance provides important protection during your stay, including:
- Emergency medical treatment
- Medical evacuation
- Repatriation
- Loss of luggage
The policy is valid for up to 92 days, including multiple entries during the validity period.
How Much Does the Insurance Cost?
The standard adult premium is the equivalent of USD 44 in Tanzanian shillings (TZS).
Special rates apply to certain travelers:
- Infants aged 0–2: Free
- Children aged 3–17: 50% discount
- Groups of 10 or more: Adults receive a 10% discount
You can purchase the insurance online before traveling or upon arrival at a designated point of entry.
Who Needs the Insurance?
From 1 October 2026, the requirement applies to eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania through:
- International airports
- Seaports
- Land border crossings
Certain categories are exempt under the applicable regulations and guidance, including Tanzanian residents, holders of valid work or residence permits, diplomats, transit passengers, diaspora, and residents of EAC or SADC Partner States.
Travelers should confirm whether an exemption applies to their individual circumstances before traveling.

Although you can purchase insurance upon arrival, we strongly recommend completing the process before your trip to Tanzania.
Having your insurance certificate ready when you arrive can help reduce unnecessary delays and make your arrival experience smoother.
Once purchased, keep a digital or printed copy of your insurance certificate with your travel documents.
What Happens If You Arrive Without Insurance?
Under the regulations, an applicable foreign visitor who arrives without valid inbound travel insurance may be denied entry into Tanzania.
For this reason, arranging your insurance before departure is an important part of your Tanzania travel preparations.
What If You Are Also Visiting Zanzibar?
If your trip includes both Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, it is important to understand how the insurance requirements apply to your point of entry.
If Mainland Tanzania is your first point of entry, and you subsequently travel to Zanzibar, you do not need to purchase the Zanzibar inbound insurance again under the applicable arrangements, provided you have the required Mainland Tanzania insurance certificate.
If Zanzibar is your first point of entry and you have already purchased the mandatory Zanzibar Inbound Travel Insurance through the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation (ZIC), you do not need to purchase the Mainland Tanzania inbound insurance again.

Eligible travelers can complete the application through the official National Insurance Corporation (NIC) online portal before traveling.
